If you’ve logged into Facebook recently you’ll see that they changed the Privacy settings – again. Obviously, this has caused a great deal of confusion and complaints from many Facebook users. It’s really Facebooks attempt to reconfigure your settings to be more optimal for their marketing needs. If you are like most people, you probably do not realize that most of your posts and information are available to everyone! Regardless, you should change this accordingly if you want to keep your name, age, location, and personal status and photo updates away from prying eyes (and Facebooks marketing team).

Let’s start by having you take a hold of your personal information and give yourself the power to tell Facebook who can see your photos, status updates, etc.

Step 1: Login to your Facebook.com account and Go to Settings > Privacy Settings

Step 2: You’ll see a of various privacy settings you can adjust. The two most important settings are Profile Information and Contact Information. Try out Profile Information first…

Step 3: Your privacy settings are secured for “their” protection (notice the box to the right of About Me is grayed out)! So Click Change Settings. It will ask to confirm password, go ahead and do that.

Step 4: Now the boxes are editable. So try clicking on the boxes to the right of About Me, Personal Info, etc and a drop-down menu will appear. Choose who you want to be able to see this particular information. I have most of all my boxes set to “Only Friends”. Facebook will not be able to use my data or photos to show to Everyone then!

Step 5: When you’ve made all the changes in the list, go back to the Privacy Settings screen (step 1 for a reminder) and then choose Personal Info. The system is the same as earlier, so go ahead and make the changes of who can view your information areas. The system auto-saves your settings, so you won’t have to look for any Save Changes buttons. If you want, click Preview My Profile to try out the new security settings.

You’re done! That is about it. If you want to know more PCWorld gives a break down of the changes Facebook made to privacy. But you should be all set if you followed the above steps! Have any other Facebook security tips?
