You’re noticing a trend here aren’t you? Yes, I’m posting more Going Green Articles! In this post, I delve into the basics of saving water while you shower while also saving money. Conservation plus Cost savings – Wonderful. Myself and my wife actually live on an Island that does not have typical underground water systems or sewers. We catch rain water off our roof that goes into a cistern to be pumped throughout the house. This is actually a pretty amazing accomplishment and a very natural way to live. The people on this island have been doing it for centuries and “How much water do you have left?” is common talk around the town.

Needless to say, Water Conservation is a huge issue here! You wont find many people here running the water while they brush their teeth, taking showers longer then 8 minutes, or installing any sprinkler systems. So this is the point where I’m sitting on my porch and really start thinking about how I use water and where most of it goes. Honestly, showering is probably the largest water usage we have and after checking the shower heads, I realized I’m losing water. No they aren’t broke, but they aren’t low-flow! What is Low-Flow?

A lot is said in a name, and basically you’ll save more with the least amount of water going through the system/showerhead. Check out the GPM (Gallons Per Minute) rating on your current showerhead. Most are like 2.5GPM or 3.0GPM. Picking out one of my suggestions can possibly cut that number in half, by 1.6GPM or so. That is a huge difference, especially for people who are paying for water (or heck, those of us who have to do a rain Dance to the Water God to rain for us!)

So my suggestions, in being innovative and green at the same time is to pickup a low flow showerhead. Here are some examples that will probably suit you really nicely.
